But, I've never heard of anyone damaging an Arduino with a Piezo.Ī 10K resistor in series with the analog input will provide some additional protection, and since the resistance is low compared to the other resistances in the circuit it won't affect your readings. The Arduino has built-in protection diodes and they will probably provide adequate over-voltage protection.The diodes provide a low resistance path to Vcc and ground so the voltage should be clipped/limited to 0-5V.Something like a 12V power supply or car battery has enough current capability to fry the protection diodes, but you'll probably be OK with the Piezo. You can get fairly high voltages from a Piezo element, but not much current. I saw that perhaps zener protection should be used. Now I red some posts on here, but I am still lost. It's hard to predict how much voltage you're going to get because it depends on the particular Piezo and on how much you flex it. You can try 1M (or maybe less) after you get it working. Higher resistance values will allow higher signals, but they will also allow more noise. Without the resistor the input will "float" to an undefined DC voltage because the Piezo doesn't provide a DC current path.ġ0 megohms is a good starting resistor value. The resistor "pulls down" the analog input so it reads zero with no signal. Put the resistor in parallel with the Piezo and connect the Piezo & resistor between the analog input and ground. I am computer engineering so I really don't have any experience with this and would be glad if I can get some help/explanation. The thing why I need this information is that first I need to know which elements I will use and how before my professor will give me components. Is only resistor fine? I am totally inexperienced in this area. My assignment is to make make a circuit on breadboard with piezoelectric film sensor, connect it to microcontroller, convert data with ADC and then print results in console, something like this: Piezoelectric Sensor Circuit - YouTube ,but in my case ADC is on microcontroller.Ĭonverting with ADC and printing data is another story, my problem is that I don't know how to make a circuit on breadboard.
