Ditch the WiFi extender (someone already said that, but seriously, those are great if you have crappy DSL but want to get a reliable WiFi signal for grandma's kindle at the far end of a large house, for decent bandwidth, forget about it). ![]() will have much more impact on the signal strength than open air. Walls, floors, wiring, concrete, rebar, plumbing, insulation, etc. If your SL router is 20 feet away and the ATT router is 50 or even 100 feet away, the difference in distance is insignificant. A WiFi extender is two *more* WiFi devices back to back. Two WiFi routers means two routers competing for WiFi bandwidth. ![]() The ceiling of your saferoom is probably much more substantial than the rest of the ceilings in that area, depending on how well it was designed, and what the threat model was.
